It's called 101 Henninger Helpful Hints. But don't let the name fool you—it's a lot more than that.
Throughout his 20 years as a professional newspaper design consultant, Ed Henninger has journeyed from Armenia to Alberta to Pittsburgh to Omaha to Knoxville to Atlanta to Mobile to Moline to...well, you get the idea.
And in every place where Ed's been, there have been opportunities to learn—from publishers, editors, paginators, ad reps, graphic artists and designers.
A couple of years ago, Ed began publishing a weekly Henninger Helpful Hint on this web site. And that led him to compile those into 101 Henninger Helpful Hints.
But the beauty of 101 Henninger Helpful Hints is that it's more than just another bunch of hints. Oh, no...it's much more than that. There are dozens of places where you can get design hints—but 101 Henninger Helpful Hints also gives you some rationale, the design thinking behind the approaches Ed suggests.
Like Henninger on Design, Ed’s first book, 101 Henninger Helpful Hints also looks at issues such as leadership, planning and follow-up.
And like his first book, 101 Henninger Helpful Hints is a joy to read—every hint on its own page and accompanied by an illustration that helps to make Ed’s point. The book is formatted to be read comfortably on-screen.
Ed's writing is concise and to the point. After all, these are hints and tips—not treatises on type size or essays on the ampersand. And occasionally there’s just enough attitude to let you know just where Ed stands.
101 Henninger Helpful Hints—it's a "must-read" for anyone interested in newspaper design excellence.
